If
you smoke, and you are looking at this page, then you almost
definitely want to stop smoking. So why haven't you already
quit?
The reason is because you think that it's going to be difficult. The
chances are you have tried, using will power, to stop smoking.
Unfortunately, you have discovered that will power works for only a
very few people. Most start again after a few weeks, or even a
few days.
In fact, with the right approach, stopping smoking can be easy
and painless and permanent.
So why do we think it's going to be difficult? Why was it so
difficult the last time you tried? It's because we have all
been brainwashed into believing it is going to hurt, that we will
find it difficult, that we will put on weight and so on. All
tricks created by the tobacco industries that rake in millions from
the poison they are able to openly and freely sell you. If you
believe it will be hard, then you will probably not even try.
Consider for the moment a typical smoker here in Spain. A packet of
cigarettes costs about 3€, at 20 a day that represents about 100€ a
month, 1200€ a year and with a smoking life of perhaps 40 years that
could be 48,000€ that you will be paying. Not something that
the tobacco industries are very keen on losing.
We are also told that a Nicotine addiction is hard to beat. This is
simply not true, after three weeks of no smoking, the nicotine
"gremlin" is dead. And the withdrawal symptoms from the
addiction are actually very slight.
The problem really is the brainwashing that is making it hard to
stop. So how does brainwashing work?
Habits
We live our lives largely by habit. If we didn’t we would have
to think about every little thing we do during the day. Standing,
sitting, walking, eating, breathing, going to work, catching the
train etc – these are all done as habits, we don’t think about them
much if at all and that frees us up to do more interesting things
But in
addition to habits such as these, we also have a system built in
that associates events with the action we must take in response. As
an example, if you drop something you “instinctively” try to catch
it. And this attempt to catch it happens long before you are even
aware that you have dropped it, that’s why we call it an instinct.
Other examples include avoiding fire, not going too near a dangerous
drop and keeping sharp blades away from your skin. I am sure you can
think of many more.
Now
both habits and instincts are simply programs that have been
developed in our subconscious minds. They are in the same group as
the very important associations that we program into our children to
keep them safe. These include teaching children to cross the road
safely, avoid sharp knives, not throw hard objects at each other,
not put their heads through windows . . .
In
addition to all this, your subconscious mind is “in charge” of
making sure that all the important minerals, proteins etc are taken
into the body to keep it healthy. If any are missing then
instructions are given to your conscious mind to eat/drink etc so as
to top up the level of the missing item. A pregnant woman often
exhibits these needs in quite dramatic ways.
The
problem is, these associations and body monitoring operations that
are designed to keep us safe can also cause us problems. A smoker
has been supplying nicotine into their body for a period of
(normally) years. And the body has got used to the chemical and
considers it to be important. So
when you stop smoking and the level of nicotine begins to fall,
your subconscious mind notices and requests a top up. The only way
this is interpreted is by your conscious mind “thinking” that it
needs a cigarette or whatever your particular fix is. The longer you
resist, the lower the level of nicotine in your body and the
stronger the “request” for a top up becomes.
Now you
consciously know that smoking is bad for you and you want to stop,
but your subconscious is a law unto itself. This is necessary to
stop us fiddling with the important programming that is in place,
but is a real problem when we need to remove something that is
wrong. In order to try to change our subconscious programming we
normally try to use what we call “will power” – one of your minds
trying to change the other. Unfortunately, the subconscious normally
wins and you still smoke. This is where hypnotherapy can help.
When
you are hypnotised it is just like falling into a day-dream. Your
day to day worries fade away and your subconscious becomes more able
to “listen” to suggestions. Your conscious mind is still there,
monitoring what is going on and making sure you stay safe, but your
subconscious is no longer locked away and out of reach so a skilled
and well trained hypnotherapist can offer suitable suggestions to
your subconscious to remove the “need” to smoke altogether. Once
this has happened, both parts of your mind can work together making
it very much easier to overcome the addiction.
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
Being hypnotised is a relaxing and very pleasant experience.
You find yourself gently drifting off into a personal day dream
while the therapist carries on talking to you almost from another
room, or so it seems. You normally remain completely aware of
everything that is said and can terminate the session at any time
should you wish to.
Most
clients tell me they don’t want to come back at the end of the
session, they are enjoying themselves and feeling so peaceful and
relaxed they don’t want it to stop.
If I Stop Smoking Will I Eat More?
Not necessarily. Most people who stop using will power or
nicotine patches do tend to eat more, but hypnotherapy can (and will
normally) include suggestions to stop this as well.
But I Enjoy Smoking
I’m afraid you don’t. What you enjoy is the removal of the
nag from your subconscious. It’s similar to when you take a pill to
remove a pain such as a headache. When the pain goes you feel good -
but you don’t say the tablet made you feel good. I’m afraid that you
have been programmed to think of cigarettes as pleasurable - when
you consider the millions made by the tobacco companies you can
easily understand why this brainwashing has happened.
Can You Guarantee I’ll Stop?
Sorry but no.
You
have to stop, all I can do is make it easier for you. I do give a
full back up service to help you should you begin to waver later,
and when people have a second session I also supply a hypnotherapy
CD for future use if required.
Can I Really Stop?
Of course you can, millions more stop across the globe
every day. Join them and free yourself from this truly lethal habit
Are There Any Dangers With
Hypnotherapy?
Absolutely none. No reports of anyone being harmed by
hypnotherapy have ever been made. Occasionally someone will try to
sue a stage hypnotist but this is rarely genuine and to my knowledge
no cases have been recorded against a professional hypnotherapist
